چکیده
Abstract Background Prescribed fire is increasingly used to restore and maintain upland oak ( Quercus L. spp.) ecosystems in the central eastern US. However, little known about how prescribed affects recently fallen acorns under different fine fuel loads, which can vary with stand composition basal area, burn season, frequency. We conducted plot-level (1 m 2 ) burns an northern Mississippi, USA, during December 2018, using single i.e., ambient), double, triple representative of those nearby unburned fire-treated, closed-canopy stands. Pre burn, we placed 30 each white alba L.) Shumard shumardii Buckley) ~1 cm below litter surface five plots treatment. Immediately post planted burned a greenhouse. After ~50% species’ germinated, measured percent germination height, diameter, leaf number germinating seedlings weekly for 11 weeks. Then, harvested determine above- belowground biomass. Results The treatment reduced acorn rates both species ~40% compared ~88% acorns. When double had <5% rate. There was no difference number, or biomass from versus either species. originating were ~11% shorter than Thus, responded similarly load treatments. Conclusions Acorns exhibited greater survival lower consequently consumption. generally produced growth patterns similar These findings indicate that regular, repeated fires canopy reductions limit accumulation create heterogeneous beds are likely increase relative sites introduced fire.

Optimizing Seed Germination and Growth of Seedlings in Persian Walnut
The efficiency of conventional stratification methods for seed germination of walnut (Juglans regia L.), which uses long moist-chilling periods, is low. This experiment was conducted during winter to spring 2014 to optimize the seed germination of walnut ‘Chandler’ via changing growing media and removing seed mechanical dormancy. Fourteen treatments were tested. None of the seeds germi...

15 صفحه اولMECHANISMS OF OAK DISPERSAL Acorn Characteristics and Oak Dispersal
INTRODUCTION Although oaks dominate many forest ecosystems worldwide (Barnes and others 1998), several aspects of oak ecology remain poorly understood including oak regeneration and masting (McShea and Healy 2001). Animals that eat and disperse acorns, such as squirrels, mice, and jays may play a pivotal role in oak forest dynamics (Jones and others 1998, Ostfeld and others 1996), influencing r...

Effect of Magnetic Field on Seed Germination and Early Growth of Calendula officinalis L.
In order to study on effect of magnetic field on germination characteristics and early growth of marigold (Calendula officinalis L.) seeds an experiment was carried out in laboratory conditions in Arak University of Iran. Seeds were magnetically exposed to magnetic field strengths, 100 or 200 mT for different periods of time; D1 (control), D2 (1 h), D3 (6 h), D4 (12h), D5 (24 h) and D6 (contin...
